A Lubbock resident has received a life sentence for the murder of Joseph Burks, a 28-year-old man. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 9, 2022, at the Angelwitch Cabaret near Highway 87, prompting a response from the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that Burks, an employee at the establishment, had been fatally shot. Despite being rushed to UMC for medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.

During the course of their investigation, authorities reviewed surveillance footage, which revealed the perpetrator as Kennon Charles Shaw, a 51-year-old man. The video showed Shaw firing a firearm at Burks before departing the club in a vehicle accompanied by another individual. Drawing connections between the shooter’s appearance and Shaw’s booking photo, investigators also identified a vehicle matching the one seen in the footage at Shaw’s residential address.

After being identified by Lubbock police, Shaw was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Austin six days later. Following his arrest, Shaw was transported back to Lubbock, where he was booked into the county jail and held on a bond of $500,000.

On Tuesday, Shaw received a life sentence in the 364th Court presided over by Judge William Eichman II. It was determined that he must serve a minimum of 30 years before becoming eligible for parole..
