Mumbai Police have apprehended a man from Bihar who had been evading arrest after violently attacking his girlfriend when she resisted his attempt to rape her, according to officials. The accused, identified as Deepak Malakar, a 26-year-old film casting director and editor, assaulted the 18-year-old college student in Versova on August 11. Following the incident, he turned off his mobile phone and fled from Mumbai. However, the police were able to track his movements and eventually located him when he made an ATM transaction in Surat over the weekend. A police team traveled to Surat, arrested him on Monday, and brought him back to Mumbai. Malakar has confessed to the assault and has been charged with attempted murder and other offenses. He appeared before a Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded to police custody until Friday. The victim, who aspired to have a career in the film industry, was left to die and suffered facial and head injuries, including skull fractures. She was admitted to the ICU of a local hospital and is now recovering. Malakar and the girl became acquainted through Facebook last year, and a few months ago, he even met her parents with a marriage proposal. Although the parents agreed and allowed him to live with them in their one-bedroom apartment, the girl made it clear that she wanted to complete her education and pursue a career in Bollywood before getting married. The police revealed that during their time together, he persistently pressured her for sexual relations, but she resisted and declined. On August 12, Malakar took her to his former home in Versova village under the pretense of collecting his belongings, but he attempted to rape her instead. When she continued to fight back, he repeatedly struck her head against the wall and assaulted her face until she fell to the floor. Believing her to be dead, Malakar locked the apartment and fled Mumbai. The girl regained consciousness and called for help, prompting the neighbors to notify the Versova Police..
