On August 12, 2023, a fatal ATV accident occurred in Taylor County, Wisconsin. James C. Wacholtz Jr., a 48-year-old resident of Rib Lake, lost control of his ATV while making a right turn, causing it to overturn. Wacholtz was ejected from the ATV and suffered severe injuries. He was airlifted to Aspirus Wausau but unfortunately passed away. VILLAGE OF RIB LAKE, WI (OnFocus) – The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call on August 12, 2023, at 12:50 p.m. reporting an ATV accident with injuries near 530 Lake Shore Dr in the Village Of Rib Lake, Taylor County. The individual who made the 911 call was part of a group driving UTVs and discovered the injured person lying unresponsive on the road. Taylor County deputies, along with fire and EMS personnel, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the deputies identified the unresponsive ATV rider as James C. Wacholtz Jr., a 48-year-old resident of Rib Lake, WI.
Based on preliminary investigations, it appears that Wacholtz lost control of the ATV while attempting to negotiate a right turn on the road, causing the vehicle to overturn. Wacholtz was ejected from the ATV during the accident.
As a result of the accident, Wacholtz sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to Aspirus Wausau. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The accident is believed to have been influenced by excessive speed, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is conducting further investigations.
