“Fatal Crash on HWY 164 Claims Life of Bicyclist Harley Auten”

On August 14, 2023, a fatal crash occurred on Hwy-164 in Marion County. A bicyclist, Harley Auten, was riding in the bike lane when a Dodge RAM 3500 collided with him. Auten was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver of the Dodge turned himself in and was arrested for Hit and Run and Criminally Negligent Homicide. On Monday, July 31, 2023, at approximately 8:00 A.M., the Oregon State Police responded to a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle on Highway 20 in Linn County. The bicyclist, Brenden Dwyer, 34 years old from Ontario, entered the highway from Knox Butte Road and collided with a westbound Kenworth CMV operated by Jamie Rowden, 53 years old from Dallas. The crash occurred in the westbound lane of Highway 20 and resulted in Dwyer sustaining fatal injuries and being pronounced deceased at the scene. The highway was closed for over 2 hours during the investigation. Rowden remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The case is still under investigation and will be reviewed by the Linn County District Attorney.

On Saturday, August 12, 2023, at around 7:05 P.M., the Oregon State Police received a report of a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle on Hwy-164 in Marion County. The preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist, Harley Auten, 42 years old from Jefferson, was riding southbound in the bike lane on Hwy-164 when a Dodge RAM 3500 driven by Brian Hammons, 55 years old from Jefferson, turned from eastbound Talbot Rd onto southbound Hwy-164 and struck the bicyclist. Auten was taken to Salem Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Hammons initially left the scene but turned himself in the next day and was arrested for hit and run and criminally negligent homicide. The investigation is still ongoing.

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, at approximately 7:42 A.M., the Oregon State Police responded to a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle on Hwy-173 in Clackamas County. The investigation revealed that Mark Sorrenson Hendrickson, 48 years old from Government Camp, was riding his bicycle south from Timberline Lodge on SR-173 when a white Hyundai Tucson driven by Emilio Trampus, 71 years old from Salem, traveling north on SR-173 failed to yield the right of way and turned left at West Leg Rd, causing the bicyclist to collide with the vehicle and become unresponsive. Hendrickson was declared dead at the scene. Trampus was unharmed. The crash is currently being investigated by the Crash Reconstruction Unit.

On Sunday, August 6, 2023, at around 3:31 A.M., the Oregon State Police responded to a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on Hwy-11 in Umatilla County. The preliminary investigation revealed that Carlos Antonio Perez, 27 years old from Kennewick, was struck by a vehicle under unknown circumstances. The vehicle operator did not stay at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicated that Seth Allen Ikaika Taylor, 22 years old from Sweet Home, was riding his Yamaha motorcycle eastbound when Joshua G. Staley, 35 years old from Sweet Home, driving a Dodge Ram 2500 attempted to make a left turn across Hwy-20 and collided with the motorcycle. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. Staley remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Witnesses reported that the motorcycle was traveling at high speeds prior to the crash. The highway was impacted for over 3 hours during the investigation.

On Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at approximately 7:30 P.M., the Oregon State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash on Hwy-101 in Coos County. A southbound Subaru Outback driven by Wayne Clinton Lannin, 79 years old from Port Orford, and a northbound Peterbilt with a loaded chip trailer driven by Daniel Warren Niehoff, 42 years old from Coos Bay, sideswiped each other, causing the Subaru Outback to lose control. The Subaru then crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a northbound Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Connie Gene Hill, 52 years old from Bandon. Wayne Lannin and a passenger, Melinda Lannin, 79 years old from Port Orford, were declared deceased at the scene. Hill was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, and Niehoff was uninjured. The highway was impacted for approximately 6 hours during the investigation. The crash is considered to be caused by lane usage, but further investigation is underway.
