Deputies from the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Southwind Road in Dillon on Saturday evening, where they discovered the deceased woman inside a vehicle, as reported by NBC WMBF of Myrtle Beach.

Coroner Donnie Grimsley identified Dr. Wendy Cook, aged 54, from Dillon County, as the victim, stating that she had been shot and her death was ruled a homicide. Kyle Church, aged 31, was arrested at the scene of the shooting and charged with homicide and possession of a weapon in a violent crime. It is unclear whether he has legal representation. Dr. Cook had overseen the start of the school year at Stewart Heights Elementary School on August 15. She had been part of the Dillon County School District for 25 years, and Superintendent Ray Rogers expressed high regard for her. “When I walked into class today, you could sense it in the air. The children entered as quietly as possible. And I didn’t have all the facts,” Rogers added. “I’m simply stunned. Disbelieving, if you will. Aware of her effectiveness as a leader and a compassionate individual. A loving mother. Her interactions with students and staff at Stewart Heights were exceptional.”

“Everything was outstanding. Please keep us in your prayers, as we are already exhausted,” he explained. South Carolina Schools Superintendent Molly Spearman also conveyed her condolences. “Her colleagues and friends at School District 4 in Dillon County speak highly of her accomplishments as a school leader and the positive influence she had on students and staff,” Spearman stated in a press release. “To everyone at Dillon High School, my deepest sympathies for your tragic loss.”
