Saturday, August 12, 2023 – The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on three high-ranking individuals associated with the Sinaloa Cartel for their involvement in drug trafficking, specifically the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States. Alfonso Arzate, his brother Rene Arzate, and Rafael Felix, all known to operate plazas for the transnational criminal organization co-founded by Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, have been targeted by these sanctions, as reported by Mail Online. These measures, implemented on Wednesday, August 9, aim to freeze any assets held by the three men within the United States and prohibit any U.S. citizens from engaging in any form of dealings with them.

The Arzate siblings, who are currently on the run, are believed to oversee the cartel’s operations in Tijuana and other nearby cities, where they facilitate the importation of narcotics, including the highly potent synthetic opioid fentanyl, into the United States. The U.S. Treasury Department has stated that both Alfonso Arzate and Rene Arzate have also been involved in kidnappings and murders attributed to the notorious cartel. Notably, both individuals were indicted separately for drug trafficking charges by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California in July 2014.

On the other hand, Rafael Felix, also known by his nickname “The Anthrax Monkey,” earned his reputation as a hitman for the Los Anthrax, an enforcer unit for the Sinaloa Cartel. Following the arrest of gang leader Rodrigo “Chino Anthrax’ Arechiga in 2013, Felix reportedly assumed a senior role within the organization. He too faced drug trafficking charges in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California in July 2014 and was subsequently apprehended by Mexican authorities in November 2014. However, Felix, alongside other members of the Sinaloa Cartel, managed to escape from a prison in Culiacán, Sinaloa in 2017 and have since eluded capture.
