On the evening of Friday, August 11, a 6-year-old girl fell victim to a suspected attack by a wild animal in Tirupati. Her lifeless body was discovered a short distance away from the Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple in Tirumala, after she had gone missing at the Alipiri walkway.
The young child, identified as Lakshita, hailed from Pothireddypalem village, Kovuru Mandal in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. She vanished during the evening hours at 7:30 pm. Forest official Srinivasulu stated, “Around a month and a half ago, forest officials had been maintaining a high level of vigilance and continuously monitoring trap cameras due to a previous attack on a child. It is likely that the incident occurred when Lakshita strayed from the walkway and was subsequently taken by an animal.”
The official further explained that even though it is unlikely that a leopard was responsible for the attack, the bruises on the child’s body suggest that it could have been a sloth bear. He added, “We will have a clearer understanding once the postmortem report is available.”
In June, another child named Kaushik, aged five, suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a leopard on the walkway leading to the Tirumala temple. Fortunately, pedestrians noticed the incident and quickly pursued the animal until the child was released. Kaushik sustained minor injuries.
