A suspect has been apprehended by the Pueblo police in relation to the shooting death of a 56-year-old man in late July. Russell Martinez, aged 52, was taken into custody on Thursday on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of Vincent Smith on July 24. The Pueblo Police Department made the announcement on Friday. The incident occurred when police responded to a report of shots fired in the 2000 block of East Evans Avenue just after 6 p.m. on that Monday. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith’s lifeless body outside a residence. Sergeant Frank Ortega, the Public Information Officer for the Pueblo PD, stated to the Chieftain that the suspect and shooter were believed to have known each other. However, he declined to provide further details about their relationship. Martinez is currently being held without bail at the Pueblo County jail and is awaiting a court appearance. His initial appearance in Pueblo District Court is scheduled for 9 a.m. on August 16. Smith’s death marked the 15th homicide in the city of Pueblo in 2023, with the total number of homicides now reaching 17 in the city.
