A DNA match has enabled investigators to identify the human remains found in a burning car on Saturday as those belonging to Clifford Lamont Jenkins, a 49-year-old resident of Beaufort. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has classified his death as a homicide, although the specific cause and time of death have not been disclosed. Jenkins had been missing since July, and the last sighting of him was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze. Investigators believe that the burnt car found at the scene matches the body style and recovered emblem of Jenkins’ vehicle, which was severely damaged by fire. The incident took place in a wooded area near the intersection of Ramblin and Ramsey Roads in Burton, approximately half a mile north of Beaufort’s Walmart. When deputies arrived, the car was not on fire and appeared to have been parked in the woods for several days or longer. Prior to the discovery of Jenkins’ body, he had been reported missing. Anyone with information concerning his death is urged to contact the authorities or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry to potentially receive a reward.
