On August 9, officers from the Bellefontaine Police Department received information indicating that Richardson, who was wanted for second-degree felony felonious assault, was present in an apartment within a local complex. Acting swiftly on this tip, officers quickly determined that Richardson was likely situated at apartment #6, 547 East Columbus Avenue.
When police arrived at 5:25 p.m., they confirmed that Richardson was indeed inside the apartment and potentially armed with a handgun. Richardson had an active arrest warrant for felonious assault and was also subject to pick-up orders issued by the State of Ohio Adult Parole Authority for parole violations.

Given the gravity of the situation, the Bellefontaine Police Response Team was deployed, and later assistance was requested from the Logan and Union County Sheriff’s Offices. This collaboration led to a joint effort by the Special Response Team of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Union County Sheriff’s Office to peacefully resolve the situation.
Throughout the standoff, crisis negotiators from the Bellefontaine Police attempted to establish communication with Richardson through various means. After initial sporadic communication, further attempts proved unsuccessful, leading law enforcement to obtain a search warrant for the apartment. Despite the use of non-lethal gas munitions, the situation remained unchanged, prompting officers to forcefully enter the residence.
In an effort to gather crucial information and insight into the situation, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office deployed a robot equipped with cameras into the apartment. The footage captured by the robot revealed an unmoving male inside the residence, later identified as Kyle Richardson.
Subsequently, officers from the Bellefontaine Police Response Team devised a plan to enter the apartment, confirm Richardson’s well-being, and ensure the safety of the environment. Tragically, upon entering the apartment, they discovered that Richardson had taken his own life with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that he was in possession of a stolen handgun.
The Logan County Coroner’s Office provided assistance at the scene, securing Richardson’s body, which was then transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. Throughout the incident, the Bellefontaine Fire Department was present to offer support and aid.
The lengthy ordeal brought together officers, deputies, firefighters, and medics who dedicated over eight hours to managing the situation. Despite the intensity of the standoff, no further injuries were reported. As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Richardson’s tragic death continues, law enforcement agencies emphasize the importance of mental health awareness and the availability of resources for those facing challenging situations.
