Carl Westcott, an 83-year-old individual who reportedly served in the US Army as a member of the 101st Airborne, lodged a complaint in August 2020, contesting the sale of his Santa Barbara, California home to renowned music artist Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom. Westcott’s argument rests on the assertion that his cognitive abilities were impaired due to the multiple narcotics prescribed for his ailments. While Bernie Gudvi, the business manager of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, is the primary defendant in the lawsuit, the couple themselves are not explicitly named as parties. Throughout the sale process of Westcott’s property, Gudvi acted as the representative for the couple.

Westcott asserts that his cognitive faculties had significantly declined due to his advanced age, the detrimental effects of Huntington’s disease (a fatal neurological disorder), and the substantial impact of a major surgery performed just days prior to the proposed contract. In his view, he was no longer capable of providing informed, rational, and sound consent for the sale of his property to Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom.

Approximately a week after the contract was signed on July 22, 2020, Westcott claims that his mental clarity began to return once the effects of the post-surgery opiates had subsided. In response, he penned a letter expressing his concerns to the real estate company responsible for marketing the house.
