The Delaware State Police are currently conducting an investigation into a tragic collision that took place on Tuesday evening in Middletown, resulting in the unfortunate death of a man. The incident occurred on August 8, 2023, at around 10:53 p.m. at the intersection of Summit Bridge Road and Armstrong Corner Road.

According to authorities, a red 2017 Mazda CX-5 had come to a halt in the left turn lane on northbound Summit Bridge Road, waiting to make a left turn onto westbound Armstrong Corner Road. Meanwhile, a blue 2003 Harley Davidson FLS was observed by witnesses to be rapidly maneuvering past traffic on the right-hand shoulder of southbound Summit Bridge Road, heading towards the same intersection.

As the traffic signal displayed a flashing red arrow, indicating caution, the Mazda initiated its left turn, crossing the intersection onto Armstrong Corner Road. Simultaneously, the Harley Davidson continued its southbound trajectory on Summit Bridge Road, entering the intersection from the right turn lane. Tragically, the Harley Davidson collided with the right side of the Mazda, resulting in the operator of the motorcycle, a 24-year-old man named Kristopher Battles from Bear, Delaware, being forcefully thrown from his vehicle. Regrettably, Battles succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the incident.

The operator of the Mazda, a 17-year-old male from Middletown, Delaware, sustained injuries that, fortunately, were not life-threatening. He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. In order to facilitate the investigation and safely clear the area, the roadway remained closed for approximately four hours.
