The fire spread quickly through the historic tourist town of Lahaina, including the popular shopping and dining area of Front Street. Evacuation centers housed over 2,100 people overnight, while emergency personnel closed all roads in and out of West Maui. A devastating wildfire spread rapidly through Maui, Hawaii, destroying homes and businesses, causing multiple casualties, and forcing residents to flee into the ocean for safety. The fire engulfed Lahaina Town, including the historic Front Street, with flames leaping above buildings. Aerial footage showed blocks of buildings reduced to ash. The fire was concentrated in two areas: West Maui, a popular tourist spot, and an inland, mountainous region. The wildfire was fueled by strong winds, which were partly caused by Hurricane Dora passing nearby. The National Weather Service reported gusts of over 60 mph that knocked out power and grounded firefighting helicopters. At least six people were reported dead and dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed. Evacuation centers housed over 2,100 people and Kahului Airport sheltered 2,000 stranded travelers. The Hawaii National Guard was activated to assist in the emergency. The fires on Maui were part of a larger outbreak of wildfires in Hawaii, including the Big Island, but there were no reports of injuries or homes lost on the Big Island. The fires in Hawaii tend to occur in grasslands on the dry sides of the islands and are generally smaller than mainland fires..
