The Elkhart Police Department has identified the victim of a house fire in Elkhart as 18-year-old Christyan Roberto Cortez. The fire, which also claimed the life of a dog, is currently under investigation by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit. Firefighters were able to rescue a second man who escaped through a window. The Elkhart Police Department has identified an adolescent who was discovered deceased during a residential fire on Tuesday morning in Elkhart, Indiana. The victim has been identified as Christyan Roberto Cortez, an 18-year-old resident of Elkhart. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently being investigated by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit. Tragically, a dog also perished in the fire, which occurred in the early hours of the morning on Myrtle Street. The house was engulfed in thick smoke and flames emanating from the windows on the ground floor. Promptly responding fire and search teams entered the premises, aware that two individuals and a pet may still be inside. While simultaneously battling the fire, they conducted a thorough search of the property. Regrettably, Cortez and the dog were both discovered lifeless on the first floor of the front apartment. Fortunately, a second man managed to escape the inferno through a window on the second floor and emerged unharmed. The firefighters valiantly fought the blaze for approximately half an hour until it was successfully extinguished. The Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire, while the Elkhart County Homicide Unit is handling the investigation into Cortez’s untimely demise..
