A 24-year-old man in Georgia has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally shooting a 17-year-old high school student and injuring her 24-year-old boyfriend, a U.S. Army member who surprised her by returning home for Veterans Day weekend last year.

Nakia Dorsey was found guilty of felony murder, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and aggravated assault by a DeKalb County jury. The verdict was followed by Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson imposing a sentence of life imprisonment plus an additional 25 years, to be served consecutively.

The victim, Jayne Salazar-Chavez, was a student and homecoming queen at Towers High School in Decatur, located 10 miles east of Atlanta. Her boyfriend, Brandon Wilson, had returned to town from his military service to surprise her.

According to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, Wilson went to Salazar-Chavez’s home on November 10, 2022, to surprise her. However, her behavior made him suspicious, so he confronted her about a suggestive text message on her phone. Wilson then called the number and spoke with Dorsey, who argued with Wilson over their relationship with Salazar-Chavez. Following the call, Dorsey demanded that Salazar-Chavez return his personal belongings.

Salazar-Chavez and Wilson left the house together in Wilson’s car, but tragedy struck when they returned later that night. Wilson noticed a man in black clothing pointing a handgun with a laser at their car. The shooter fired multiple shots, hitting Salazar-Chavez in the torso and arm, while Wilson sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound to the leg. They drove to a nearby gas station and called 911, but Salazar-Chavez succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

An anonymous tip led investigators to Dorsey, who was identified as the main suspect based on social media messages and cellphone location data. He was apprehended a few days later at an apartment complex near the crime scene.
