OMAHA POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A <a href="https://countylocalnews.com/">shooting</a> INCIDENT THAT RESULTED IN A FATALITY AT BENSON PARK THIS MORNING. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. I'M JULIE CORNELL. I'M ROB MCCARTNEY. OFFICERS DISCOVERED THE BODY AROUND SEVEN O'CLOCK THIS MORNING AT THE PARK LOCATED NEAR 72ND AND MILITARY. JOSH KRISTIANTO FROM KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN IS REPORTING LIVE FROM THE SCENE WITH THE LATEST UPDATES. JOSH? THAT'S CORRECT. WE SPOKE TO THE VICTIM'S SISTER, WHO WAS STILL VERY EMOTIONAL. SHE TOLD US THAT HER BROTHER WAS HOMELESS AND HAD TRAVELED FROM LINCOLN TO OMAHA TO SEE HIS DAUGHTER. THE POLICE WERE INITIALLY CALLED TO BENSON PARK FOR A REPORT OF AN INDIVIDUAL LYING DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK. HOWEVER, THEY SOON DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE INCIDENT. OMAHA POLICE FORENSICS UNITS WERE SEEN USING METAL DETECTORS TO SEARCH FOR EVIDENCE, AND UPON ARRIVAL, OFFICERS LOCATED THE DECEASED MALE IN THE GRASS. THESE OFFICERS NOTICED SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, WHICH PROMPTED THEM TO CALL THE HOMICIDE UNIT. INVESTIGATORS AT THE SCENE DID NOT COMMENT ON THE SPECIFICS OF THESE SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT DOUGLAS COUNTY PROSECUTORS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE VICTIM HAD BEEN SHOT. DETECTIVES ARE CURRENTLY CONDUCTING A CANVASS OF THE AREA TO FIND ANY WITNESSES WHO MAY HAVE SEEN OR HEARD ANYTHING. WE CANNOT CONFIRM IF THE PARK IS EQUIPPED WITH SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS. THE POLICE HAVE CLOSED OFF THIS SECTION OF BENSON PARK THROUGHOUT THE MORNING AND AFTERNOON, BUT THEY HAVE NOW REOPENED IT TO THE PUBLIC.
