Tim Anderson threw his glove to start a fight, and soon after, José Ramírez threw a punch at him. The altercation between Anderson, from the Chicago White Sox, and the Dominican Ramírez, from the Cleveland Guardians, erupted into a brawl at second base, leading to a bench-clearing incident and six ejections in the sixth inning of the game, which Chicago won 7-4 against Cleveland on Saturday. Ramírez landed a powerful punch to Anderson’s face, causing him to fall backwards. What followed was a prolonged and intense fight, one of the worst seen in recent years in Major League Baseball.

Noah Syndergaard, recently acquired by Cleveland, said, “From the moment I stepped foot in the clubhouse, I knew these teams didn’t like each other. And I don’t think this will be resolved anytime soon.”

Cleveland manager Terry Francona, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh, and Dominican relief pitcher Emmanuel Clase were ejected, as well as Chicago manager Pedro Grifol, for their actions following the brawl, which included several additional skirmishes on the field and in foul territory.

Francona commented, “It’s not something fun, but boys will be boys.”

It took 15 minutes for the umpires to restore order. The altercation began when Ramírez slid headfirst into second base, hitting a run-scoring double. Anderson stood on top of Ramírez, who was caught between the shortstop’s legs. When the Dominican infielder got up, he pointed a finger at Anderson’s face and yelled something, leading to both players preparing to exchange punches.

Anderson dropped his glove and threw the first punch. The fight ensued as players from both dugouts and bullpens rushed onto the field at Progressive Field. Sarbaugh and Clase were involved in subsequent altercations during the interruption.

“I felt like I got him,” said Ramírez. “I understand that he’s not respecting the game. Not only yesterday, but he’s been doing this for a while, and he’s been talked to about it. I’ve personally talked to him and told him he can’t do that because he could hurt someone… What he did was not right, he hit me really hard, and I corrected him, and he invited me to fight. If he invited me to fight, I had to execute.”

Some White Sox coaches forcibly took Anderson away, but he returned from the clubhouse minutes later. His teammate Andrew Vaughn carried him downstairs after the final confrontation.

The White Sox were leading 5-1 when the brawl occurred.

After being knocked down by the punch, Anderson became furious and tried relentlessly to approach Ramírez again, Cleveland’s star third baseman. Several Chicago players attempted to restrain him.

Tempers had momentarily cooled before Francona and Grifol began arguing, leading to new shoving matches between players and coaches, while the crowd became heated.

The umpires needed several minutes to review what had happened before announcing the ejections.

It is almost certain that Ramírez and Anderson will be suspended, and the same fate awaits other participants in the fight..
