A Forest Service firefighter working in Oregon was killed in a vehicle accident on August 4. The community is in mourning following the tragic loss of a Forest Service firefighter from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Sadly, the firefighter, Benjamin Charles Sapper, aged 21, was involved in a fatal on-duty vehicle accident near Powers, Oregon on August 4. Benjamin, originally from Boulder, Colorado, was a first-year hand crew member on the Gold Beach Ranger District.

Benjamin had an impressive educational background, having graduated from Boulder High School and the University of Colorado with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Mathematics. He was not only academically inclined, but also enjoyed various activities such as baseball, chess, and skiing. Benjamin had a passion for engaging others in discussions about philosophy and mathematics. His decision to join the Forest Service was driven by his desire to serve the community and be part of a strong team. Furthermore, he had plans to pursue a graduate degree in Earth Sciences at the University of British Columbia starting this fall. Benjamin’s vibrant personality and kind-hearted nature earned him the love and respect of those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt.

Expressing their condolences, Gold Beach District Ranger Kailey Guerrant described the loss as devastating. The Gold Beach and Powers Ranger Districts, known for their close-knit community, are coming together to grieve and support Benjamin’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters during this incredibly difficult time..
