The tragic event began when a Fauquier County sheriff’s deputy observed the stolen Honda traveling at a high speed of approximately 100 mph on Route 17 northbound near Hastings Lane. Despite the deputy’s attempts to stop the vehicle, Greenfield continued to accelerate, reaching speeds of 115 mph during the pursuit. The deputy, concerned for the safety of other drivers on the road, occasionally discontinued the chase due to the dangerous conditions.
As the pursuit approached Delaplane, Greenfield disregarded multiple vehicles stopped at a railroad crossing and collided with the side of a moving Norfolk Southern train at around 12:22 a.m. Promptly, the deputy in pursuit requested emergency medical services (EMS) for the driver and passengers, extinguished a fire in the vehicle’s engine bay, and provided initial medical aid.
The investigation into the crash, conducted by the Virginia State Police in consultation with the Fauquier Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, was ongoing, and charges against Greenfield were pending as of midday Friday. The conditions of Greenfield and Russell were not immediately known.
In an update, it was revealed that Haidan Smallwood, the deceased passenger, had recently graduated from Clarke County High School. No charges had been filed in connection with the incident as of late Thursday.
