Police in Hilo, Hawaii are investigating the discovery of a body on the edge of Wailoa River. The body was found in shallow water and has been tentatively identified as a 64-year-old man. Police authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the discovery of a deceased individual, found on the outskirts of the Wailoa River in Hilo during the morning hours of Friday, August 4, 2023. Responding to a report, South Hilo patrol officers, accompanied by personnel from the Hawai‘i Fire Department and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE), swiftly arrived at the Wailoa River. The reported body was located in shallow water near the river’s edge on the makai side, specifically between the Kamehameha Statue and the Ironworks Building, just upstream from the Wailoa Small Boat Harbor.

Assistance was provided by the Hawai’i Fire Department and DOCARE personnel to extract the lifeless body from the water. The Area I Criminal Investigation Section personnel promptly arrived at the scene to continue their investigation, which is currently categorized as a coroner’s inquest. While the deceased has been tentatively identified as a 64-year-old man from Hilo, positive identification is pending, and his identity is being withheld until his next of kin can be notified. The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where official pronouncement of death occurred at 11:11 a.m.

At present, no indications of foul play have been identified by the police; however, an autopsy has been scheduled for the early part of the following week to establish the precise cause of death.
