The Easley Police Department received a request for help on the railroad tracks along East Main Street early Wednesday morning. In response, the police contacted North Norfolk Southern to halt all train activity in the vicinity. Unfortunately, one officer from the Easley PD, identified as 22-year-old Matthew Hare, was struck and killed by a train along the tracks. The Pickens County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Officer Hare was attempting to rescue a suicidal individual from the tracks when the incident occurred.
