In response, the police contacted North Norfolk Southern to halt train activity in the vicinity. Regrettably, one officer from the Easley PD, identified as 22-year-old Matthew Hare, lost his life during this incident. The Pickens County Coroner’s Office reported that Officer Hare was attempting to rescue a suicidal individual from the tracks when he was struck by an approaching train. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In honor of the fallen officer, several law enforcement agencies held a processional later that day.
