The director of the Miami-Dade police force, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez, was involved in an incident outside a Florida hotel where he was reported to be threatening self-harm with a gun. Bodycam footage released recently provides new insight into the events that took place on July 23. Later that day, Ramirez shot himself in the head while traveling with his wife on Interstate 75 near Tampa. Jody Ramirez, his wife, called 911 in a panic, and Ramirez was taken to a Tampa hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition. The hospital did not confirm his presence as a patient. The incident began when Tampa police were alerted to an argument between a man and a woman outside a hotel hosting the Florida Sheriff’s annual conference. The man, later identified as Ramirez, allegedly pointed a gun at his head. By the time police arrived, the couple had gone to their hotel room, and there was no available security footage of the incident. Officers eventually confronted Ramirez and handcuffed him, despite his claims of being the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department. Ramirez’s identification was found in his room, along with his gun, which was still holstered. Ramirez and his wife were questioned separately, and Jody Ramirez mentioned that they had been drinking and the argument was typical for their 30-year marriage. She also noted that her husband always carried a gun and had personal demons from his job. After the questioning, Ramirez was released, and the couple returned home to Miami. Ramirez later called Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and offered his resignation, admitting to making a mistake. However, he subsequently shot himself, according to the police transcript. Ramirez, a 27-year veteran of the Miami-Dade police force, had announced his candidacy for the newly created role of sheriff but it is uncertain if he will continue in the race. An interim police director has been appointed by Mayor Levine Cava..
