The crossing had been identified as needing safety improvements in a document from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) last year. The document referred to the crossing as a “humped crossing” and a potential site for an improvement project. MoDOT spokesperson Linda Horn stated that the crossing already had lights and gates, but was unsure if plans had been made to address the steep grade. The collision injured three members of a family from Minnesota who were traveling in the semi. A 12-year-old boy sustained serious injuries, while the 40-year-old mother and an 8-year-old boy suffered minor injuries. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it is too early to determine if any violations or charges will be filed. This was not the first incident at the crossing, as a similar crash occurred in June 2021.
