The preliminary hearing for Travis Lofton, the man accused of shooting and killing Jason Mallette at a cafe in June, has been delayed due to a personal matter involving Lofton’s defense attorney. A little over a month has passed since a tragic incident occurred on both sides of Mobile Bay, shattering the lives of two families. Unfortunately, these families will have to wait even longer for answers as Travis Lofton’s defense attorney has requested a delay. Assistant District Attorney Patrick Doggett explained that the defense counsel had a personal matter that hindered their preparation for the preliminary hearing.

This news comes as a disappointment to the family members of Jason Mallette, who was fatally shot early one Thursday morning in June. Mallette and a co-worker had arrived at Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe before sunrise when they were confronted by Lofton, a man identified by the police. It is reported that Lofton asked for Mallette’s name before allegedly firing the fatal shot.
The grieving process has been incredibly difficult for Mallette’s family, who have lost a beloved family member. Doggett, after speaking with the family, acknowledged the immense pain they are enduring. He stated that Mallette had a large family who held him in high regard, and they are coping with their loss like any other family would.
The preliminary hearing, which provides an opportunity to gain insight into the events leading up to the crime, will now be postponed. Doggett emphasized that while the wheels of justice may turn slowly, it is crucial that they continue moving forward. The rescheduled preliminary hearing is now set for August 24. In the meantime, Lofton remains in the Baldwin County Jail, where he is being held on a bail amounting to $250,000..
