Investigation Underway by South Dakota’s Highway Patrol

LAWRENCE COUNTY, S.D. – Tragedy struck on Sunday afternoon when a Kansas man lost his life in a one vehicle crash near Lead, S.D. The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Dillan Stelly.

According to preliminary crash information, the incident occurred on U.S. Highway 14A, close to mile marker 36. Stelly was riding a 2023 Indian Super Chieftain motorcycle and failed to navigate a curve in the road. As a result, the motorcycle veered off the road, entered a ditch, and collided with an embankment.

Following the crash, Stelly was immediately airlifted by Black Hills Life Flight to Monument Health in Rapid City. Unfortunately, his injuries proved to be fatal. It is worth noting that Stelly was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

As a result of the crash, both lanes of U.S. 14A were temporarily closed for approximately one hour and then reopened to traffic.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. However, it is important to remember that all information released so far is only preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progresses.
