Yakima County Sheriff’s Office Identifies Deputy Shot in the Line of Duty

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office has identified the Deputy shot on Tuesday as 51-year-old Travis Watkins, a 10-year plus veteran of the force. Sheriff Bob Udell expressed relief that Watkins survived the incident, despite being shot in three different locations on his body.

Udell emphasized the impact of the shooting on the entire agency, stating that it is shocking when a Deputy is injured in the line of duty. He added that while it is a possibility that law enforcement personnel are aware of, it is something they never want to happen to someone within their own agency.

Upon receiving the call about the shooting early Tuesday morning, Udell rushed to the hospital before the ambulance arrived. The scene at the hospital was filled with authorities from various agencies, including 6 Yakima Police cars with lights and sirens. Officers and Deputies from around the valley, some off duty, visited the hospital to show their support for Deputy Watkins.

Udell highlighted the dangers of domestic calls, stating that they are some of the most hazardous situations for Deputies to respond to. The incident occurred on South Fork Road, a dark and remote area where radio communication is sometimes unreliable. As Watkins spoke to a woman at the front of the home, the suspect, identified as 34-year-old John Borgman, opened fire on him. Another Deputy on the scene helped save Watkins’ life by getting him medical assistance and removing him from the immediate area.

After the shooting, Borgman managed to obtain a police radio from a Deputy car and was briefly on the air before being apprehended. Udell mentioned that this hindered the ability to contact the two Deputies involved in the incident.

Borgman is currently facing charges of first-degree assault and assault domestic violence and is being held in the Yakima County jail. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
