Judge Denies Bond for Woman Charged in Fatal Crash in Charleston

A circuit court judge in Charleston, South Carolina, has denied bond for Jamie Lee Komoroski, the woman charged in a deadly crash that took the life of a newlywed bride and left the groom and two others seriously injured. Komoroski, 25, faces charges of reckless homicide resulting in death and felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury or death.

Komoroski’s lawyers filed a motion for bond on May 19, arguing that she is not a flight risk or a danger to the community. However, Judge Michael Nettles denied the request, citing concerns about Komoroski being a flight risk.

In his ruling, Nettles set conditions for the case to be tried by March 2024. If the trial does not take place by then, Komoroski will be released on a $150,000 surety bond. She will be subject to electronic monitoring, house arrest, and will only be allowed to leave her home for medical emergencies or with prior court approval. Komoroski will also be required to wear a SCRAM monitor, which detects alcohol consumption.

The fatal crash occurred on April 28 when Komoroski rear-ended a golf cart carrying four people. One passenger, Samantha Miller, died in the crash. Komoroski was driving at a speed of 65 mph and her blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit at the time of the incident.

Family members of the victims attended the hearing and emotionally pleaded for bond denial. Komoroski watched the proceedings via video conferencing and became visibly emotional when her family advocated for her release.

In addition to the criminal charges, Komoroski is also facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the groom, Aric Hutchinson. The lawsuit alleges that Komoroski had a “booze-filled day of bar hopping” and claims that the establishments she visited should have exercised due care in serving alcoholic beverages.

Judge Nettles urged both sides to expedite the trial, emphasizing the importance of closure for everyone involved..
