The Vermont State Police is investigating a fatal crash between an SUV and a motorcycle in Dorset. The crash occurred when the SUV attempted to turn left into a parking lot and turned into the path of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist, Richard Treat Williams, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center. The State of Vermont Department of Public Safety and Vermont State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on June 12, 2023, in Dorset, Vermont. The crash involved a 2008 Honda Element SUV and a 1986 Honda VT700c motorcycle, resulting in the death of the motorcycle operator, Richard Treat Williams, 71, of Manchester Center.

According to initial investigations, the crash occurred around 4:53 p.m. on Vermont Route 30 near Morse Hill Road. The Honda Element, driven by Ryan M. Koss, 35, of Dorset, was traveling southbound when it attempted to turn left into a parking lot. The motorcycle, driven by Williams, was traveling northbound. The Element stopped, signaled a left turn, but then turned into the path of the motorcycle. Williams was unable to avoid a collision and was thrown from his motorcycle, suffering critical injuries.

Williams was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, where he was later pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner’s Office determined that his cause of death was severe trauma and blood loss from the crash.

On August 1, 2023, the Bennington County State’s Attorney’s office requested that the Vermont State Police issue a citation to Koss on a charge of grossly negligent operation with death resulting. Koss voluntarily met with troopers at the Shaftsbury Barracks, where he was processed and released. He is scheduled to appear for arraignment on September 25, 2023.
