A death investigation is underway at an apartment complex in southwest Atlanta after a homeowner shot a 25-year-old man. The homeowner believed the man was attempting to burglarize the apartment. The man was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital. It is unclear if the man’s entry was intentional or a mistake. Homicide detectives are investigating the incident. Death Investigation Underway at Southwest Atlanta Apartment Complex

ATLANTA, Georgia – A death investigation is currently being conducted at Landing Square apartments in southwest Atlanta. According to Atlanta police, they received a call around 1 a.m. reporting an attempted burglary that resulted in a person being shot.

The incident occurred at the apartment complex located at 3378 Greenbriar Parkway. Elijah Mathis, a 25-year-old resident of the complex, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The homeowner, believing a burglary was taking place, shot Mathis.

The motive behind Mathis’ actions is yet to be determined, as it remains unclear whether his entry into the apartment was intentional or a mistake. Investigators are currently speaking with the homeowner to ascertain the events leading up to the shooting. According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, Mathis resided in the same apartment complex as the incident took place.

Homicide detectives have taken charge of the investigation. Neighbor Shawnda Minor woke up to the distressing scene outside her window and remarked on the unfortunate outcome, stating, “In America, you do have to kind of protect yourself, I do understand that. I don’t think the person who maybe was trying to break in knew what was on the other side. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bad situation.”
