Deputy recruit Alejandro Martinez, who was struck by a wrong-way driver while jogging with an academy class in South Whittier, has tragically passed away after being hospitalized for the past eight months. Martinez, 27, was among 75 recruits participating in a training run on November 16, 2022, when Nicholas Gutierrez, 22, plowed into the group with his SUV. The horrific crash left 25 recruits injured, with Martinez in critical condition due to internal bleeding, brain swelling, and broken legs.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Martinez succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Surrounded by his loved ones, Sheriff Robert Luna, and other department members, Martinez’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department expressed their condolences to Martinez’s family, friends, and academy classmates, emphasizing that he will forever be remembered for his dedication and commitment to helping others.

Investigators believe that Gutierrez intentionally struck the recruits, although his defense claims he fell asleep while driving to work. While no drugs or alcohol were found in his system, legal analyst Alison Triessl believes Gutierrez will face criminal charges ranging from murder to vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving causing great bodily injury.

Martinez’s passing has deeply impacted the law enforcement community, with a procession held late Friday night as deputies and law enforcement personnel escorted his body to the L.A. County Coroner’s Office. His memory will continue to inspire others to share and speak up for justice, law, and order..
