A Los Angeles County sheriff’s recruit has tragically passed away eight months after a wrong-way driver crashed into a group of police recruits, according to authorities. Alejandro Martinez fought for his life during this time, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced.

The incident occurred in November when about 75 recruits from Sheriff’s Academy Class 464 were running near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road in Whittier. The SUV veered into the group, injuring 25 cadets. The driver of the SUV, identified as 22-year-old Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez from suburban Diamond Bar, suffered only minor injuries. Initially arrested, Gutierrez was later released pending further investigation.
