According to reports from NBC affiliate WTVJ, the incident occurred on Wednesday when a Miami-Dade Police Department boat engine hit Covey as they were departing from a safety stop.

Covey, 39 years old, was airlifted to a nearby hospital with injuries to his right heel, right arm, and buttocks. He remains in an unknown condition at this time.

Francesca Lopez Covey previously served as the Public Engagement Liaison in the Obama administration, adding significance to the incident.
