In a shocking incident, an armed man who had escaped from a New Hampshire prison took hostages and made threats at a Victoria’s Secret store in Miami Beach. The man has been identified as 29-year-old Darien Young, who had escaped from his transitional housing unit in the minimum-security New Hampshire Department of Corrections on July 21.

Six days later, on Thursday, around 5:30 p.m., police were called to the lingerie chain’s Miami Beach location due to a disturbance. Officers arrived at the scene and began evacuating stores in the area. Eventually, they encountered Young, who was threatening two people in the store with a knife. In response, an officer opened fire, shooting and killing Young.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots and described the chaotic scene. Shanell Santiago, who works nearby, said she heard the shots and initially thought it was in her head. She described it as “something major” and suspected it could be a hostage situation.

Young, who had a history of charges including receiving stolen property, burglary, falsifying evidence, and controlled drug acts prohibited, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. He was eligible for parole as early as July 31, just ten days after his escape and three days after he was fatally shot. The incident is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
