Authorities in San Mateo, California, reported a disturbing incident where a man allegedly stabbed a woman to death and proceeded to share a video of the crime on Facebook. The footage played a crucial role in capturing the suspect, identified as Mark Mechikoff, a 39-year-old individual. Law enforcement apprehended Mechikoff approximately 30 miles away from the San Mateo apartment complex where the victim’s lifeless body was discovered.

The San Mateo Police stated, “While the motive for stabbing the victim is still under investigation, we do know Mechikoff mercilessly filmed the last moments of the victim’s life and posted the video to Facebook, then fled the area.”

Authorities have named the victim as Claribel Estrella. Mechikoff now faces charges of murder, with additional enhancements for causing severe bodily harm and using a knife, as declared by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

During his court appearance, Mechikoff did not enter a plea. The arraignment has been postponed for a week to appoint a court-appointed attorney, according to District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe.

While the nature of Mechikoff’s relationship with the victim remains unclear, investigators are actively working to determine the motive behind the crime, as confirmed by the district attorney.

The incident came to light when a concerned individual in Nevada alerted the Nye County Sheriff’s Office after witnessing the video on Facebook. The sheriff’s office traced the phone number associated with the Facebook account to a large apartment complex in San Mateo, where Mechikoff was residing.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the complex, law enforcement discovered Estrella’s body inside a unit after nearly three hours. Mechikoff was subsequently apprehended in San Jose, two hours following the discovery.
