Inmate Fatally Shot by Florida Police Officer After Threatening Women with Knife

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A Florida police officer fatally shot an inmate who had escaped from a minimum security transitional housing unit in New Hampshire after he threatened two women with a knife, authorities said. Darien Young, 29, was killed by a Miami Beach police officer at a Victoria’s Secret store at 901 Lincoln Road. Young had been suspected of shoplifting when he took a woman and her daughter hostage at around 5:30 p.m. EDT. He was taken to an area hospital where he later died, while the two women were unharmed.

According to the New Hampshire Department of Corrections, Young had escaped from the Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester on July 21. He had been imprisoned in New Hampshire after being convicted of receiving stolen property, burglary, falsifying physical evidence, and drug charges. Young was eligible for “minimum parole” beginning on Monday, according to prison officials. His maximum release date was set for January 31, 2028.

The shooting is currently being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and the officer who fired the fatal shot is on administrative leave, following standard procedure. The FDLE will conduct interviews, review video footage, and analyze evidence as part of their investigation.
