MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A Florida police officer fatally shot an inmate who had escaped from a minimum security transitional housing unit in New Hampshire after he threatened two women with a knife, according to authorities.
The incident occurred at a Victoria’s Secret store at 901 Lincoln Road, where Darien Young, 29, was suspected of shoplifting. The television station, WPLG-TV, reported that Young took a woman and her daughter hostage at around 5:30 p.m. EDT.
Following the incident, Young was taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Thankfully, the two women were not harmed during the altercation, as reported by WTVJ.
Young had escaped from the Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester on July 21, according to a news release from the New Hampshire Department of Corrections. He had been serving time for various charges including receiving stolen property, burglary, falsifying physical evidence, and drug charges.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the shooting incident. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases.
“I was able to hear the gunshots. I heard the sound. I thought I was mesmerized a little bit,” said Shanell Santiago, a witness who works near the lingerie store.
The FDLE stated that their investigation will include establishing a timeline, interviewing officers and witnesses, and reviewing any available video footage. However, their focus will be limited to the shooting itself..
