A male suspect is in critical condition after being shot by law enforcement officials in Hillsborough County. The incident occurred on Thursday night when the suspect allegedly stole a car and held an individual at gunpoint.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the stolen car at AdventHealth Tampa, located at 3100 E. Fletcher Ave, at approximately 6:38 p.m. With the assistance of the vehicle’s GPS, deputies were able to track the car to Plant City around 8 p.m., according to an official statement released by the Sheriff’s Office.
Utilizing their aviation unit, patrol vehicles, and K9 deputies, law enforcement pursued the vehicle for several miles until it entered Pasco County. To aid in the operation, the Sheriff’s Office contacted Dade City police, who promptly responded.
Upon reaching a Publix on US 301 in Dade City, the suspect abandoned the stolen car and sought refuge in a nearby neighborhood, hiding in a shed. Subsequently, he encountered a man standing outside his home. Allegedly, the suspect threatened the man with a gun and demanded that he drive him away in his car. Authorities described this incident as a carjacking.
While law enforcement was establishing a perimeter around the suspect, the victim, still held at gunpoint, managed to drive past the police. Shortly after, the car came to a stop, and the suspect exited the vehicle, once again aiming his gun at the driver. The driver quickly sped away, prompting the suspect to flee on foot.
Deputies and Dade City police closed in on the suspect and issued commands for him to drop his weapon. Instead, the suspect pointed the gun at the Dade City police officers, resulting in four Sheriff’s Office deputies and one Dade City police officer firing their service weapons. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. As of early Friday morning, his identity has not been disclosed.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has initiated an investigation into the incident.
The four deputies involved in the shooting, Brennan Allen (24), Cody Burgess (26), Jonah Daniel (23), and Talyor Zackman (29), are currently on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
