Man Shot and Critically Injured by Law Enforcement Following Stolen Car Incident

A man was shot and critically injured by law enforcement officials in Hillsborough County after allegedly stealing a car and holding a person at gunpoint on Thursday night.

The incident began when the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen car at AdventHealth Tampa, located at 3100 E. Fletcher Ave. Deputies were able to track the car’s location to Plant City using the vehicle’s GPS, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

With the assistance of their aviation unit, patrol vehicles, and K9 deputies, law enforcement pursued the stolen vehicle for several miles. Eventually, the driver led them into Pasco County where the Sheriff’s Office notified the Dade City police for assistance.

Upon reaching a Publix on US 301 in Dade City, the suspect abandoned the stolen car and fled to a nearby neighborhood. It was there that he encountered a man standing outside his home. Allegedly, the suspect pointed a gun at the man and forcibly commanded him to drive away in his own car, thus initiating a carjacking situation.

As law enforcement established a perimeter to contain the suspect, the victim, who was held at gunpoint, managed to drive past the police barricade, according to officials.

Shortly after, the car stopped and the suspect exited the vehicle, once again brandishing his gun towards the driver. The driver quickly accelerated away, and the suspect fled on foot.

Deputies and Dade City police closed in on the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon. Ignoring the commands, the suspect instead pointed his gun at the Dade City police officer.

In response, four deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and one Dade City police officer discharged their service weapons. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition. As of early Friday morning, the suspect’s identity has not been confirmed.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has initiated an investigation into the incident.

The four deputies involved in the shooting have been identified as Brennan Allen (24 years old, 1 year of service at the Sheriff’s Office), Cody Burgess (26 years old, 4 years of service at the agency), Jonah Daniel (23 years old, 8 months of service at the Sheriff’s Office), and Talyor Zackman (29 years old, less than 2 years of service at the agency).

Following standard procedure, all deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.
