On Friday, West Midlands Fire Service announced that the body of a swimmer found in waters off Belgium has been formally identified as Mr. Hughes. In a joint statement released through the fire service, Mr. Hughes’ family expressed their immense grief, stating that they “miss him more than words can ever say.” They described Iain as someone who dedicated himself to helping and supporting others.

Mr. Hughes was swimming the English Channel to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation, The Fire Fighters Charity, and the Midlands Air Ambulance. His goal was to raise £21,000, symbolizing £1,000 for every mile of his swim. However, as of Friday, his fundraiser had exceeded this target, raising over £56,000.

The family expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support and donations received, but also acknowledged the heartbreak of Iain never knowing the final total. They requested privacy during this difficult time and chose not to give media interviews.

West Midlands Fire Service chief fire officer Wayne Brown expressed his devastation upon hearing the news and emphasized that Iain’s family is their primary concern. He thanked everyone who has been affected by Iain’s disappearance and expressed gratitude for the kind messages and the tremendous response to Iain’s fundraising efforts.
