ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A breakthrough in DNA analysis has led to the identification of a suspect nearly 30 years after the murder of a 12-year-old girl in Hernando County, Florida in 1993.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Al Nienhuis announced the arrest of Jeffrey Crum for the murder of Jennifer Odom, who was only 12 years old at the time. The arrest comes after years of investigation and advancements in DNA technology.

On that fateful day in 1993, Jennifer Odom got off the school bus as usual, waving goodbye to her friends. However, she never made it back home. Witnesses from the bus reported seeing a blue truck following her at a slow pace, as reported by The Associated Press.

Tragically, Jennifer’s body was discovered six days later in an orange grove in Hernando County.

After nearly three decades, a DNA match finally linked Jeffrey Crum, now 61 years old, to the crime. Crum is already serving two life sentences for a 2015 sexual battery and attempted murder conviction.

During a news conference, Sheriff Al Nienhuis revealed that DNA evidence collected from Crum’s previous sexual battery cases provided the crucial breakthrough in Jennifer’s case.

Florida State Attorney Bill Gladson has announced that prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty for Crum in Jennifer Odom’s case, given the severity of the crime and the evidence against him.

“This is every parent’s nightmare,” said Gladson during the news conference. “We have confidence that we have the right person and the right aggravators to treat this as a death penalty case.”

The arrest of Crum has brought some closure to Jennifer’s family, but authorities believe that there may be more victims due to Crum’s criminal history. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information related to Crum’s activities in the 1980s or 1990s to come forward and assist with ongoing investigations.
