Confrontation Between Deputy and Burglary Suspect Ends in shooting near Flagstaff

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has released an edited body-camera video capturing a dramatic confrontation between a deputy and a burglary suspect near Flagstaff. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning when Sgt. Jess Payne responded to reports of a burglary in progress in Doney Park.

According to the CCSO, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Eric Adamson, fled the scene by jumping out of a window he had just broken. Payne, along with other deputies, immediately initiated a search. At approximately 3:30 a.m., Payne located Adamson and yelled at him to turn around and face away. As a precautionary measure, Payne had his gun drawn, uncertain of Adamson’s intentions.

Initially, Adamson complied with the commands, placing his hands on his head and getting on his knees. However, as Payne approached with handcuffs, Adamson suddenly attacked him. In the ensuing struggle, Adamson managed to gain control of Payne’s gun, leading to a gunshot being fired. The body-camera footage, slowed down by CCSO, shows the intense altercation between the two individuals.

The video then resumes at normal speed, capturing the sounds of screams and another gunshot. Payne can be heard shouting for Adamson to stay down while declaring shots fired and the suspect down. Additional deputies arrived on the scene two minutes later and immediately attended to Adamson’s injuries, applying a tourniquet to his left arm to stop the bleeding.

Meanwhile, Payne sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. As per standard protocol, he has been placed on administrative leave. The Northern Arizona Multiagency Officer Involved shooting Investigation Team will conduct an investigation into the incident.

This shooting marks the 14th incident involving law enforcement outside of the Valley and the 53rd in the state of Arizona this year.
