Flagstaff AZ: On July 27, 2023, at 3:10 AM, CCSO Deputies responded to the report of a burglary in progress on Hidden Hills Rd. in Doney Park.

The reporting party informed that an unidentified individual had broken into his residence and that he had detained the intruder at gunpoint. However, the suspect managed to escape by jumping out of the window he had just broken into. At 3:17 AM, deputies arrived at the scene to ensure the safety of the victim and commenced a search for the suspect. At 3:24 AM, the suspect was located west of the residence. Sergeant Jess Payne, an experienced deputy with 11 years of service, verbally commanded the suspect to comply. Initially, the suspect followed the commands but suddenly attacked Sergeant Payne, putting him in a chokehold and attempting to seize his weapon.
In fear for his life, Sergeant Payne fired at the suspect, who was actively assaulting him and attempting to take control of his firearm. The suspect was struck once and was subsequently apprehended. Deputies at the scene applied a tourniquet to the suspect to stop the bleeding before paramedics arrived. The suspect, identified as Eric Adamson, a 32-year-old male from Peoria, AZ, will face multiple felony charges upon his release from Flagstaff Medical Center. Sergeant Payne, following standard agency policy, has been placed on administrative leave.
The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Northern Arizona Multiagency Officer Involved shooting Investigation Team, which comprises detectives from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the Flagstaff Police Department, and the Northern Arizona University Police Department.
