A North Carolina fisherman discovered his missing friend’s fishing rod days before the friend’s lifeless body was found, according to officials.
The two friends were fishing near a lake on July 22 when one of them, 29-year-old Kyle Zachary Moberly, expressed his desire to swim to the other side of the cove instead of walking the trail to get there, as reported by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
While Moberly’s friend continued fishing from their original spot, he realized that Moberly was no longer in the woods but found his fishing rod, the sheriff’s office stated in a news release.
Moberly went missing from the Buddle Creek Access Area near High Rock Lake in Lexington, a popular boating and fishing destination located approximately 35 miles south of Winston-Salem.
First responders were called to the area around 9 p.m. on July 22 after receiving a possible drowning report. They conducted thorough searches using boats, sonar technology, and foot searches. After two days of searching, a 911 caller reported sighting a body.
The body was recovered from the water and identified as Moberly, a resident of Lexington. Deputies informed McClatchy News via email that foul play is not suspected in his death.

“If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and leave the water,” advises the group. “Whether it’s rough currents, rainfall, fatigue, or muscle cramps, it’s always better to return another day.”
