A witness to Malcolm X’s 1965 assassination, Mustafa Hassan, broke his silence and claimed that he heard NYPD officers ask if the convicted murderer was “with us.” Hassan, who was part of Malcolm X’s security detail, made the shocking revelation at a press conference in New York City. He believes that the assassination was orchestrated by the NYPD and that they attempted to help the gunman escape. The case against the convicted men, Thomas Hagan, Khalil Islam, and Muhammad Aziz, was recently reopened, leading to their exoneration in 2021. Malcolm X’s daughters plan to sue the police and other government entities, alleging their complicity in the assassination. MEAWW reported

According to Hassan, he was a member of Malcolm X’s security detail at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965, when the civil rights leader was brutally shot 21 times. Thomas Hagan, also known as Talmadge X Hayer at the time, was apprehended at the scene and later confessed to shooting Malcolm X. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in 1966 and was released on parole in 2010. Hagan was convicted alongside two other individuals, Khalil Islam and Muhammad Aziz, who passed away in 2009 and 2018, respectively. However, in 2021, they were exonerated after a renewed investigation revealed shaky evidence and the withholding of information by authorities.
Revelation of NYPD’s Potential Involvement
During the press conference, Hassan unveiled his belief that Malcolm X’s assassination was orchestrated by the NYPD. He claimed that while checking security, he witnessed Hayer pulling the trigger. Hassan read from his affidavit, stating, “I would later see the same man outside as he was being beaten by Malcolm X’s followers, while a group of policemen suddenly showed up on the scene, asking if he was with us.” He further explained that the officers shielded Hayer, trying to determine if he was affiliated with them. Hassan observed the NYPD preventing Malcolm’s followers from retaliating against Hayer, as reported by Daily Mail.
Controversial Claims and Evidence
According to Hassan, he prevented Hayer from escaping after the shooting. He displayed images of the incident and mentioned that a police officer tried to stop him from apprehending Hayer. Hassan expressed his acceptance of undercover cop Eugene Roberts’ account, who claimed there had been a “dry run” for the assassination. Roberts shared this information during an interview with Dan Rather in 1992 for a CBS program that coincided with Spike Lee’s movie featuring Denzel Washington’s Oscar-nominated portrayal of Malcolm X.
Allegations of Government Involvement
In February, Malcolm X’s three daughters – Ilyasah, Attallah, and Qubilah Shabazz – announced their intention to sue the police over their father’s assassination. Renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, with whom the daughters have a longstanding partnership, took up the case. Crump, along with co-counsel Ray Hamlin, plans to file a “notice of intent” to initiate a lawsuit against the NYPD and other government entities, alleging their complicity in the assassination. The lawsuit will claim that authorities involved in the investigation fraudulently concealed information related to Malcolm X’s murder. “We are asserting in our legal action that the government was involved in the conspiracy to kill Malcolm X,” stated Crump during the press conference.
