Three U.S. Marines Found dead in North Carolina Gas Station Vehicle

Authorities have confirmed that the cause of death for the three Marine lance corporals found dead in a vehicle at a gas station in North Carolina was carbon monoxide poisoning. The autopsies conducted on Wednesday revealed this tragic cause of death. The Marines have been identified as Lance Cpl. Tanner J. Kaltenberg, 19, of Madison, Wisconsin; Lance Cpl. Merax C. Dockery, 23, of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma; and Lance Cpl. Ivan R. Garcia, 23, of Naples, Florida.

Sheriff Alan W. Cutler expressed his deep sadness over the “timeless and tragic death of these three young men, who served our country honorably.” He extended his thoughts and prayers to the families and colleagues of the Marines during this difficult time.

The tragic incident occurred at a Speedway gas station in Hampstead, which is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Camp Lejeune, where the Marines were stationed, according to the sheriff’s office and the Marine Corps.

The sheriff’s office had initially been investigating a missing person case when they received a call from the mother of one of the Marines, stating that her son had not arrived on a scheduled flight to Oklahoma. The woman informed authorities that she spoke with her son’s unit supervisor, who mentioned sending someone to the Speedway gas station to search for him.

Shortly after 9 a.m., deputies were notified that the Marine and two others had been discovered in the vehicle at the gas station.

The three lance corporals were part of Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, as confirmed by the Marine Corps.

Brig. Gen. Michael E. McWilliams, commanding general of 2nd Marine Logistics Group, expressed his condolences, saying, “My deepest sympathy and condolences are extended to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lance Cpl. Kaltenberg, Lance Cpl. Dockery, and Lance Cpl. Garcia.”

The families of Dockery and Kaltenberg have chosen not to comment at this time. The family of Garcia could not be immediately reached for a statement.
