Three Bodies Found in Remote Colorado Campsite Identified as Two Sisters and Teenage Boy
Gunnison County Coroner Michael Barnes has stated that he believes malnutrition and exposure to the elements may have caused the deaths of three individuals found “fairly mummified” in a remote Colorado campsite earlier this month. The bodies have been identified as Christine Vance, 41, Rebecca Vance, 42, and Rebecca’s 14-year-old son, according to the Gunnison County Coroner’s Office.
The Gunnison County Coroner’s Office is currently analyzing the cause of death, and their findings are pending. However, Barnes speculates that the harsh winter of last year, coupled with possible malnutrition, could have contributed to their demise. The exact time of their deaths has not been determined.

According to Barnes, the family had likely been camping in the area near Gold Creek Campground since July 2022 and attempted to stay through the winter. It is believed that they had planned to “go live off the grid,” as informed by a family member who contacted the coroner’s office. However, the exact location of their intended destination was unknown.
The bodies were discovered by a hiker who found one of the individuals about 1,000 feet from the campsite near Gold Creek Campground. The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office later located the campsite and found two additional deceased individuals. Barnes noted that one body was found outside a blue tent, while the other two were found inside the tent. The site also contained empty food cans, books, a restroom area, and a lean-to shelter.
It is unclear whether the family had been reported missing prior to their discovery. Barnes mentioned that they had literature about outdoor survival and foraging, suggesting that they may have been in survival mode during the harsh winter. However, they appeared to have stocked up on supplies from a grocery store.
