Tragedy struck last week in Georgia as a train collided with a car, resulting in the untimely deaths of a mother and her 17-year-old son.
The fatal crash occurred on Thursday morning at the intersection of Highway 159 and Double Run Road, as confirmed by statements from the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office and a spokesperson from the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
Based on a preliminary report obtained from the Georgia State Patrol, it was determined that the CSX freightliner collided with the family’s 2016 Kia Optima after the car disregarded the safety arms at a railroad crossing.
According to the report, the crossing arms were fully activated and lowered, while the red lights were active, illuminated, and flashing at the time of the incident.
The report stated, “The driver of the Kia Optima bypassed the southbound crossing arms by steering to the left around them. As the vehicle entered the intersection, the front of the eastbound train struck the passenger side of the vehicle.”
The 17-year-old driver, Dallas Corbin Dozier, was behind the wheel of the car, with his mother, 34-year-old Brandy Elizabeth Drinnon, as the passenger. Both individuals were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
When authorities arrived, the train was blocking the intersection, and the Kia was off the road, as reported by ABC affiliate WMAZ-TV.
Witnesses claimed to have observed the Kia maneuvering around the safety arms before the collision, according to Wilcox County Sheriff Robert Rodgers.
The investigation into this devastating incident is still ongoing.
Dallas Dozier, described as a student at Hawkinsville High School, enjoyed gaming and spending time with his cousins during his free time, according to his obituary.
Brandy Drinnon, a self-employed tattoo artist, had a passion for drawing, traveling, music, fishing, and cherished her family and children, as mentioned in her obituary.
In an effort to cope with this tragic loss, Brandy’s sister, Kimberly Dixon, has set up a GoFundMe campaign to seek donations and prayers from the community.
