Investigation Underway into Triple Homicide in Igembe, Meru County

Authorities are currently probing the motive behind the tragic shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals in a village located within Igembe, Meru County.

The first victim, identified as 22-year-old Florence Mukira, was fatally shot while transporting a sack of maize that she had harvested during the night of July 24.

Nicholas Mugambi, a surviving family member, revealed that the attackers ambushed them while they were harvesting crops on their farm.

“We immediately fled upon hearing the gunshots. We are clueless as to why they are targeting us,” he expressed.

Mugambi informed the police that they were in the process of maize harvesting when the sound of gunfire compelled him to seek safety.

Upon returning, he discovered his wife lying in a pool of blood, having sustained a gunshot wound to her back, with the bullet exiting through her right chest.

She was quickly rushed to the Mutuati sub-county hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police arrived at the crime scene minutes later and recovered a single spent cartridge.

Furthermore, they found a motorcycle and the sack of maize that the deceased intended to use for transportation.

During their patrol, the officers proceeded to the nearby Luthaya hills, where they discovered the lifeless bodies of two men with gunshot wounds.

The victims were later identified as Stanley Kalunge, 38, from Tira area, and Stanley Kiboi, 40, from Atutuine village.

Another spent cartridge was found at the scene, and the bodies were transported to the Nyambene sub-county hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the shooting, which appears to be the work of a single gang.

Local residents expressed their frustration with the police’s delayed response in apprehending the gunmen.

The gang managed to flee the scene, and as of now, no arrests have been made. The locals believe that cattle rustlers may be responsible for this recurring pattern, as this is reportedly the sixth shooting incident in the area.

Mutuati police boss Joseph Chesire assured the public that an investigation is underway, with additional personnel dispatched to the area to track down the gang responsible for the heinous crime.
