The bodies of two sisters and a teenage boy were recently discovered in a makeshift campsite in the US state of Colorado. The decomposed remains were found by a hiker who stumbled upon the site, which was located approximately 15km from the small community of Ohio City. Authorities believe that the trio, identified as Christine and Rebecca Vance, aged 41 and 42, and Rebecca’s 14-year-old son, died during wintery conditions.

Coroner Michael Barnes speculated that the group may have been caught off guard by the sudden onset of winter and were forced into survival mode inside their tent. Other possible causes of death being investigated include starvation and carbon monoxide poisoning from attempts to stay warm.

The Vance sisters and Rebecca’s son had apparently chosen to live “off the grid” and had been camping in the area since July of the previous year. They had moved 275km from Colorado Springs in search of a new start. When their bodies were found, an unfinished shelter, books, and empty food cans were also discovered at the campsite.

Family members revealed that Rebecca had become fearful of the world and believed it was spiraling out of control, prompting her desire to escape and protect her loved ones. However, their stepsister, Trevala Jara, tried to dissuade them from leaving, but her efforts were unsuccessful.

Jara shared a photo of herself with the trio, taken shortly before they embarked on their off-grid lifestyle. She emphasized their inexperience in living in the wild and stressed the dangers of relying solely on internet videos for survival knowledge.
